STYRENE - ACRYLONITRILE (SAN) |
|
|
Styrene - acrylonitrile is a random copolymer of styrene and
acrylonitrile. It is a stiff & brittle thermoplastic with
good impact strength, chemical resistance and excellent clarity.
It was commercialised in the year 1937 by I.G.Farben Industrie.
SAN is manufactured by the addition polymerisation of styrene
and acrylonitrile monomers. It is produced by three different
polymerisation techniques, viz. emulsion, suspension and continuous
mass polymerisation. As bulk polymerisation is hazardous,
continuous mass process is found to be economical. Lower temperature
results in high molecular weight compounds whereas high temperature
results in low molecular weight compounds whereas high temperature
results in low molecular weight compounds.
