ABOUT POLYCARBONATE (PC)

PC is an amorphous engineering thermoplastic with excellent combination of properties. It is one of the engineering plastics to compete with die cast metals. It was first commercialised in 1958 by General Electric Co. Today about 75% of the market is held by GE Plastics and Bayer with their products. High molecular weight polycarbonate is manufactured by phosgenation of bisphenol - A. Phosgene is bubbled through a solution of bisphenol-A in pyridine at 25 to 35șC. During polymerisation, the hydrochloric acid produced reacts with pyridine and precipitates as phridine hydrochloride.


IDENTIFICATION
Burns with difficulty has a yellow flame and is self-extinguishing it has a Specific Gravity of 1.2. It is soluble in methylene chloride and ethylene dichloride.
